Kickapoo casino address – brufbouderirecalmonctimenvila

IAmA Native American, for over a year now I have been an elected representative of my Tribal Government, and beginning Labor Day I will be sent on the most ambitious vision quest ever attempted. AMA

I can speak to great length on the legal and regulatory issues surrounding both Tribal governments/sovereignty in the United States, and Tribal Casinos.
I can address cultural and historical questions related to the Odawa, Ojibwe, and Bodewadmi peoples (thats the Ottawa, Chippewa, and Potawatomi in English), or any other Midwest/algonquin tribes in a general sense.
I am a Potawatomi, or Bodewadmi, from Michigan. I have worked for my tribe's casino as a "Casino Host" for a couple of years, which gives me some knowledge of casino operations and how the big players are handled and treated. I was elected over a year ago to my tribal government. Beginning on Labor Day, I will be leaving my hometown in Michigan destined for a small Kickapoo tribe in Texas who claim ancestry with the Potawatomi. From there, I will travel to New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ontario, and back to Michigan. All on foot, visiting tribes and people from my tribe and others. The purpose of this walk is to invite the spirits to show me my place among my people (i.e. the job I am suppose to do in my community), and to gather knowledge about the traditions and practices from those elders who are still with us. (helpful hints on long-distance backpacking accepted)
For the record, I only begrudgingly used the term "Native American" for universal recognition. I personally prefer to generalize a continent's worth of separate and distinct cultures as "American Indians". Of course, not generalizing at all is best, so please refer to me as a "Potawatomi" before anything else.
EDIT - 6:08 AM EST August 1: You've all been great. I really appreciate the support from all of you. I'm going to get some sleep now, but I promise I will come back here later to answer all of your questions. Also, I'll post a link to my blog so those of you interested can follow along on my journey (but first I have to make sure it can handle a small boost in traffic).
EDIT - 4:46 PM EST August 1: If anybody was looking for verification, I've had a good conversation with moderator metaranha who has posted this comment with the details.
EDIT - 5:40 PM EST August 1: Okay, okay... I'm gonna cave to the pressure and post my blog now: http://aaronhorner.net/ Be kind, I'm only a man.
From user CookieDoughCooter:
Are there any books, movies, or another form of media that are true stories or realistic fiction that depict American Indians in a way that you find to be interesting and faithful?
Anything by Vine Deloria, Jr. is awesome, although he is more historian and scientist than he is story-teller. A short list of my favorites:
If you want to read some great fiction that depicts American Indians accurately, start with Sherman Alexie:
Outside of those authors, some popular picks are Black Elk Speaks and Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee.
As far as movies go, any self-respecting Indian has seen the movie Smoke Signals dozens of times. Powwow Highway is a favorite of mine, and Dance Me Outside is movie gold, although it doesn't get enough attention.
From user derpinita:
How strong is the tabacco you use? I've heard the home-grown stuff is pretty potent.
We don't use tobacco for the nicotine, we use it for prayers.
There is a story I have heard many times, about a time long ago before we had tobacco. It is said that the people in this time lived happy, without worry for many generations. However, in time the land stopped giving crops, and the game became harder to hunt, and the people grew sick and weak. It was in this time of woe that a man of the village, well loved by all, decided that he must do something to help his people. He fasted and he prayed, and when he was done he gathered all of the people of the village and told them so: "My people," he said, "Listen to me, for I am going to help you. I am going to leave you, and I want you to bury me where I ask. And when you bury me there I want you to leave that place, and do not come back to that place for one year. But after that one year come back to me. I will return to you in the same place, and my sacrifice will help you to get better." There was much sadness and crying, but he told them, "Don't cry for me. This is a good thing that I do." So the man died, and they buried him in the place he asked to be buried, and they left him there alone. After one year, they returned to his place to find a plant growing there that they had never seen before. A tall plant with many wide and round leaves. The helped the plant grow to maturity, and they gathered its seeds and dried its leaved and kept it sacred to them, for they knew it was that beloved man returned to them. Thereafter, whenever they took anything from the world, they laid down some of that tobacco to say thanks, as a sacrifice, to give back where they have taken. And still to this day to we sacrifice that good man in return for everything we take, and we honor him.
